8 TV couples that taught us how to love

Relationships are complicated — from sustaining a good one to realizing you might be “more than friends,” plenty of challenges arise. And even though television and social media would have us believe 20-somethings are thinking about relationships and love all the time, most of us would admit we still don’t quite know how relationships work.

But it’s not for lack of trying. We were all raised on TV couples who’ve pointed us down the right path. Here’s some love advice from the eight greatest TV couples.

Pete’s World: Family | Teen

&&
They find a beach. A new beach. One free from painful memories, one where they can make new memories, together. He shifts the little box around in his pocket nervously. The knee of his jeans is soaked-through by the wet sand, but he couldn’t care less, because she’s promised her forever to be their forever.
&&
He’s beaming and all she can manage is a grin and a “shut up” before tugging him down, lips are crashing into hers. Similar to the first time she kissed this new him, but this time there is significantly more sand in various items of clothing, and a hell of a lot more tongue.
&&
He finds Pete’s World’s version of the Instagram app just before the honeymoon. He catches her off guard when he staggers back from the loo with just his phone. She allows him that shot before snatching the phone from his hands and commencing her own thorough documentation. She finds two new spots that make him buck.
&&
Their first Vitex party as Mr. and Mrs. Tyler goes a lot better than they expected. When Jackie said she was going to “handle everything” they got a bit worried. They planned their own wedding, small and private, but agreed to let Jackie have all the official events. Thankfully, she hand-picked the press in attendance, scheduled everything to a tee, and limited the nearly endless stream of “congratulations” from people they didn’t even know. The Torchwood-only after-party was much more their speed.
&&
Fall was when they slowly stopped using condoms. Well, to be honest, they had slowly stopped using condoms on their honeymoon, but fall was when the last box ran out and they decided to not buy another one. It didn’t take long, though. They both had a feeling, but to have it confirmed, was the best surprise of their life.
&&
She catches him again in the baby’s room. The nap was apparently not going well, but the look on both of their faces was enough to make Rose’s heart feel like it was going to leap right out of her chest. “She’s so tiny, Rose.” The little girl in her crib was as enamored by her father as her mum was and loved wrapping her little hand around his finger.
&&
They savor the quiet moments together while the baby naps, too exhausted to do much else than try and take a nap themselves. The baby cries twenty minutes later. The Doctor tucks Rose into bed with a kiss. She was up all night with her. He has this shift.
&&
They build up quite a collection of trainers; black ones, grey ones, purple ones, maroon ones, and just as they were solidly buying toddler ones, they needed a new pair of baby ones. Can’t have a new Tyler without a pair of trainers.

a-broken-chameleon-circuit:

everyone on my dash is screaming “HE WAS SO GOING TO SAY HE LOVED HIM” , but he did say that, weren’t you paying attention?

Sherlock and John don’t communicate the way “normal” people do - how could they? One is an adrenaline junkie who seeks out bullets even after one left a web of dead cells on his shoulder and the other introduces himself as a “high functioning sociopath” to protect himself from his own emotions (because his childhood pet died - I’m crying into eternity over that.)

So what did we see?

He took his glove off when he shook John’s hand, he offered his name, full name, to be theirs - remember how John hates his name, but “gives” it whilst Sherlock is, to his eyes, flirting with Irene?

He shot a man. He shot a man. In the head. Point blank, no regrets. He shot a man for John Watson. He jumped in a fire for John Watson. He jumped off a roof for John Watson.

He helped pick out the colour for the bride’s maid’s dresses for John Watson. He wrote that best man’s speech for John Watson. He saved “the most unsociable man he’s ever met” for John Watson.

He moved John’s chair because he couldn’t bear to see it vacant. (or for Janine to sit in it? It’s John’s after all.)

He got bloody engaged to ensure John’s wife was fine.

He relapsed.

He fucking bought himself back into consciousness with the thought “John Watson is in danger” after being shot.

He let John choose if he wanted Mary to stay. He only told John “six months”, so he wouldn’t worry him, because that’s not on - John can’t worry, because John Watson is his top priority.

He knew he was going to his death so he made that joke about his name so he would see John Watson smile.

He did all that fully knowing that while John is his pressure point, he is not John’s.

If that’s not an “I love you”, than, my dear fandom, I don’t know what more do you want.

THANK you.

Pete’s World: Life at Torchwood | Teen

&&
It takes fifty takes for him to get a decent picture for his ID badge. He tells Pete to use “Tyler” on all his official paperwork. “Smith” didn’t fit this new him anymore, Rose was his family, he was a Tyler.
&&
He only wears suits to official meetings, now. Rose bought him his first pair of skinny jeans, and when he tried them on one morning, they ended up on the floor and Rose and the Doctor ended up a half-hour late to work. His uniform switched from pinstripes to sweaters and skinny jeans after that.
&&
He hates the paperwork and rules (which he rarely followed anyways) but loves the coffee shop they pass on days when they walk to work. Hand in hand, arms swinging on the upbeat of their steps. She orders him decaf at first, of course met with a pout, until she reminds him of his new human body with no caffeine tolerance.
&&
Sometimes they order a cab when it gets too late to walk back. They always sit the same; Rose curled into his side, head resting on his shoulder with a hand sneaking ‘round his waist. The Doctor, with his arm ‘round her, face half buried in her hair. The whole ride to the flat.
&&
He really loves surprising her in her office or when she surprises him. Lunch breaks, after hours, before hours, oh-hey-look-everyone-their-was-a-small-but-interesting-explosion-in-the-Doctor’s-lab breaks. Anything to feel her lips against his, the blood rushing, and the touch of skin against skin, tongues, nips, soft moans. It’s often rushed but the small scratch marks on both their desks provide a lasting reminder.
&&
When it all hits him, this new life, all confined to this single planet, he ends up at the same spot on shore. Rose panicked at first, but soon just met him down at the shore, tea in-hand and a fiver for the chip shop on the way home.
&&
He was never happier when his feet hit the tarmac. Especially when their life of two, became a life of three, duo missions were rare. Trips to Torchwood Munich and Mumbai felt like universes away and for the first time in a very long time, he didn’t feel that impulse to run, to travel. It wasn’t gone, just running in the background. No, his new impulse, the one that clicked as soon as he saw those two little lines, was home. Home was Rose and their little one.
&&
It only took one close-call on a routine mission for them to retire from “active” status. He never held her so tight, faces buried into each other’s shoulders. They would stick to the administrative stuff. The Doctor could still tinker in his lab and Rose still had some duties as Vitex heiress, but no more missions. No more missions, unless it was a trip to find nappies, chips, and mint chocolate chip ice cream at 2 am.

I had a dream last night that Hugh Grant and Colin Firth were in a movie about gay dads and that Hugh Grant, who was the primary childcare provider, had a family emergency and Colin Firth was stuck with their children and looking bewildered and Fitz from the Lizzie Bennet…
